Office Walk-in Closet

Nick and I began working on the large walk-in closet in the office this weekend.  We believe this closet was originally the master closet before the master suite was added on.  It has the size to prove it too.  It's 8 feet wide, and 4 feet deep.  It will make a great house storage closet, since there are not really any good storage closets in the house.

So here's what it was:

It was cleared out, to begin the reno process.

We removed the old, out of service security system, and added some lighting.  We decided to add a plug-in track lighting with a switch by the outlet.  This may not be the permanent solution, but the closet desperately needs light.  We may get the closet wired when we do other electric work.
Here's the now lit closet:

We have also filled holes with a light weight filler, and painted to give us a clean slate to work with.

Next weekend we plan on getting wood, cutting and painting them to prepare for installation.

Clean cubes

I finally got to nearly finish the countdown list.  The cubes (Ikea's Expedit) are clean, and organized.  It has always been a dumping ground.  We organized it with boxes, magazine holders, and trays.
Here's the before:
Not pretty huh?  With a little tweaking we have this:
We now have a mail area; two trays that serve for mail and magazines/catalogs.
I have an area for my items; wallet, keys, sunglasses, etc.  My lunch bag is in the cube below.
 Here are some more shots.
That's "Bock-Bock Chicken".  My siblings and I use to ride it when we were very little.

So there it is, cleaner cubes.  Now it's time to begin work on the big walk-in closet.

PS-What do you think of the new header?

Let There Be Light!

I'm still working on the countdown list, even though the deadline has passed.  This week I worked on the dining room light.  It was a little too dark to eat dinner there.
I found a pendant light, Basisk, from Ikea that I knew Nick and I would like.  It plugs into the wall, which isn't ideal, but will have to do for now.  I just needed to get some brown electrical tape to wrap around the cord.

Here's the dining room in December:

Here's how it looks with the curtains, and new lighting:

Here's a close up of the wrapped cord.  The cord visually disappears now.

So another item is off the list.  This week, I will be working on cleaning and organizing the cubes.

I Heart Organizing feature

The master closet is being featured on I Heart Organizing.  I have been following I Heart Organizing for a couple months now, and am so happy to have Jen feature our closet on her blog.  Her blog has provided a lot of inspiration for me.  Nick even follows it!  He's a little OCD about organizing, so I Heart Organizing is great place for him to find ideas as well.
Thank you to those who found me through I Heart Organizing!
A little background on us.  We started this blog to keep our families update with us.  We live in Florida, and our families are in Wisconsin, Arkansas and Texas, so they don't get to see us as often as either would like.
We bought our house September 2011, and have been working on projects to make it ours.

We are amateur DIYers, learning skills as we go.  I'm interested in interior design, and am happy to finally have a place to find my style.  My father is a carpenter (Castle Rock Carpentry, Wausau, WI), so we have a professional to help us when we need it.
I usually post every Sunday, about what we have done in the last week.
We are planning some small and big projects in the next couple of weeks, including another closet makeover!
I hope you enjoy Zoo View Home!

Odds and Ends

Last weekend we worked on the closet, so this weekend was working on odds and ends around the house.  Sometime this week, during an average Florida storm, our mini gutter on the front of the house fell off.  It didn't seem like a strong storm, but it wasn't attached with any nails or screws.  It was just tucked under some trim.

So I jammed the gutter back into trim, and nailed it in place.  It shouldn't fall down now.

We also worked on the master closet again!  We replaced the bi-fold closet door with a curtain, and threw down a runner.

We also worked on organizing the kitchen pantry, and front landscaping.

Nick and I are getting ready to work on the large walk-in closet in the office/lounge.

How was your week?
